DLD College London Talk

Speaking at DLD College London: A Day I Won’t Forget

From the moment I stepped through the doors of DLD College London, I could sense it was a special place. There was an energy in the building,a warmth and a buzz, that instantly made me feel at home. But what made the biggest impression on me were the students: curious, open, engaged, and full of potential.

I was invited to speak about something deeply personal to me, resilience. It’s a word that gets used a lot, but for me, it’s more than just a concept. It’s been a lifeline. Drawing on my experiences in professional cricket with Sussex and Ireland, and more recently, my journey after being diagnosed with hereditary spastic paraplegia, I shared how life’s toughest moments can also be the most defining.

I spoke honestly about the highs and lows, both on the pitch and off it. I talked about how my diagnosis changed everything but also gave me a new lens through which to see the world. I wanted the students to understand that while we can’t always control what happens to us, we can choose how we respond. And in that choice lies real power.

One message I really hoped would land was this:

“Taking the easy option now will only make it harder for you in the future.”

Especially with exams looming, I know how important it is to put in the effort now, not just to get results, but to build character, confidence, and long-term strength.

It was an absolute privilege to share my story with such an incredible group of young people. Their thoughtful questions, respectful attention, and genuine interest reminded me why I do this. Resilience isn’t just for athletes or people facing illness, it’s something we all need, in every walk of life. Thank you, DLD, for such a memorable day.
