A Special Day at Caterham School

I recently had the joy of speaking to both Year 7 and 8 pupils, as well as the Sixth Form, at Caterham School and what a truly uplifting experience it was.

From start to finish, I was struck by how engaged, open, and thoughtful the students were. Whether they were just starting their journey or preparing to take their next steps beyond school, their enthusiasm and curiousity were inspiring.

I spoke about resilience as a skill, something we can all learn and strengthen, no matter where we’re starting from. It’s not about being fearless or unshakable; it’s about learning to get back up, again and again, even when life throws the unexpected at us.

Then, later, I received an email from a parent. Their kind words reminded me exactly why I do this. It’s not about standing on a stage or more accurately sitting, it’s about reaching even one young person and helping them see their own strength in a new light.

That’s what makes it all worthwhile.

Dear Mr Patterson,

I am so sorry to bother you over the weekend.

I understand that you delivered a talk to the students the other day and only just finding time today.

It’s not often my daughter comes home from school and expresses how something has moved her.

She shared with me how you gave a captivating talk on resilience, using your own life experiences, which included a powerful and thought-provoking message about being the best version of ourselves and not always taking the easy route, when difficulties arise. She mentioned how you relayed how obstacles make us stronger, when approached with a growth mindset. These are topics, my husband and I always convey to her but as parents, it feels it is often not listened to and just not getting through.

As teenagers, it can seem nothing can touch or rock their core but you, Mr Patterson, have confirmed that it can.

I really felt I needed to voice how much your talk deeply resonated with her and the engaging manner in which you conveyed key concepts, left a lasting impression on my daughter.

Thank you for your dedication, your exceptional contribution and your unique perspectives, which continue to make significant impact.
